SINGAPORE — After a one-year hiatus, the Singapore Hit Awards (SHA) is back.

Co-organised by MediaCorp’s Y.E.S. 93.3FM, Channel U and MeRadio, it will be held on Nov 22, 7.30pm, at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.

And it’s reaching out to more. SHA 2013 is set to reach out to radio and television audiences in more than 20 cities, including China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Holland, United States of America and Canada.

Media representatives from these regions will vote for the Global Eminence Award, one of the top honours in this year’s show.

Said Y.E.S. 93.3FM Assistant Programme Director and this year’s Executive Committee chairman Cruz Teng: “Mandarin artistes and songwriters have held their own against the unrelenting Korean pop wave and emerged better and stronger with albums that appeal to a worldwide audience. With the Chinese population growing in major cities around the world, it is only apt that we join hands to celebrate Chinese music, wherever we may be.”

Music professionals and media veterans from across the globe will pick the winners of 10 professional categories, including Best Album, Best Male Artiste and Best Female Artiste.

Listeners will choose the recipients of the popularity awards — Most Popular Male Artiste, Most Popular Female Artiste and Most Popular Group/Band — and the Regional Outstanding Artiste awards from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. SMS voting commences on Sept 23.

Singapore artiste JJ Lin leads the list of nominations, alongside heavyweights like Jay Chou, Sandy Lam, Jolin Tsai, S.H.E and Penny Tai.

Incidentally, the SHA 2013 coincides with the 30th anniversary of Singapore’s premier Mandarin chart show, Pick of the Pops (POTP).

Said Teng: “We’ve reached an amazing milestone. We had to refer to charts from Hong Kong and Taiwan before 1983. No one took the Singapore music scene seriously, and senior music labels based outside the island had no concrete idea who was big here. POTP took on a pivotal role in market development and was instrumental in breaking local xinyao artistes and regional new acts.”
