Surfer’s Paradise (Cody Simpson) | 4/5
SINGAPORE - No one would’ve guessed that Australian singer-songwriter-musician Cody Simpson, who has released two EPs, two studio albums, and has been on tour four times, is only 16 years old this year. Tellingly, Simpson’s latest album, Surfer’s Paradise, is yet another offering that is perfect for beach parties. From the fast-hitting synthesized beats in If You Left Him For Me, to catchy guitar riffs in La Da Dee, Simpson’s pop tracks are guaranteed to sing straight into any girl’s heart, even as tracks like Pretty Brown Eyes sees him flaunting his falsetto-high notes in a memorable chorus. When one gets tired of all frenetic energy, there are tunes such as Summertime Of Our Lives to calm you down (especially during a drive). Other notable tracks include Sinkin’ In - a track that sounds like it could be inspired by Jason Mraz, and Immma Be Cool (featuring rapper Asher Roth). Although Cody’s popularity might not be as explosive as fellow teenage star Justin Bieber’s, he seems to be heading in the right direction.
