SINGAPORE — It has been about two years since her last album, but Tanya Chua is back with a brand new record that may surprise some of her fans.

Called Aphasia, Chua’s 10th Mandarin album features introspective pop electronic numbers, instead of her signature karaoke-friendly ballads.

“You need a lot of courage, as well as experience (to cut an album like that),” the Singaporean singer-songwriter said in an interview at Mandarin Orchard Hotel. “Those familiar with my music will know that when you think of Tanya Chua, you’ll think of love songs. But would it still be meaningful if I made another album with music that is already familiar to everyone? I have been considering these questions over the past few years.”

The Mandopop star, who is currently based in Taipei, also said that she felt the need to write an album that excited her.

“After making music for so many years, you get tired of your own music. It’s not that I don’t like my own music, but I don’t want to write the same things,” she explained. “My music is very real, very reflective of my own circumstances. And at this stage, I feel the need to change. I need excitement, I need to play around with things, and to come up with something different, so that I can go back to feeling the excitement of being a musician.”
