SINGAPORE — Nathan Hartono may be the first Singaporean to reach the finals of Sing! China, previously known as The Voice Of China, but he is certainly not the first to do us proud. Here is a list of other homegrown singers who have made a name participating in major singing competitions in the region:

KIT CHAN

Kit Chan’s stint on Hunan TV’s I Am A Singer early last year may have been short-lived, but it certainly re-ignited the Mandopop singer’s career. Chan signed a two-year contract with major Chinese record label Taihe shortly after the competition, and took her Spellbound concert tour to cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, in addition to Singapore.

HADY MIRZA

The winner of the second season of Singapore Idol was also the very first winner of Asian Idol — a competition held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2007. Now the founder of a food venture, Hady has said in an interview that he has no plans to return to singing.

NG LING KAI

Ling Kai, protege of veteran songwriting duo Lee Wei Song and Lee Si Song, made waves in China when she performed her rock ballad Single One as a finalist on Chinese reality singing-songwriting competition Sing My Song in 2014.

ALFRED SIM AND TAY KEWEI

The husband-and-wife duo took part in the fourth season of The Voice Of China. Unfortunately, they were eliminated before they could reach the finals.

WONG JINGLUN

Wong shot to fame as a contestant on the third season of popular Taiwanese singing competition One Million Star. The 33-year-old now splits his time between Taiwan and Singapore, where he regularly performs on musicals and television variety shows.
