My awkward moment: Nikki Muller

SINGAPORE — When it comes to live coverage, there’s no escaping the cameras. That’s what Nikki Muller found out at last year’s Grand Prix TV for the Singapore Formula 1 event.
“I was hosting it together with Max Loong and at some point there was something wrong with someone’s chassis. And I said: ‘Yes, that’s why it’s very important to have a nice rack’.”
Cue looks of disbelief from everyone watching the live feed. “It was on every monitor in every suite all over the circuit and everyone was like, ‘What?’ and I was like, ‘No, no, I meant nice race!”
The Fly Entertainment artiste will have more opportunities to perfect her sporting language, though, as the newest presenter on Fox Sports Central Asia. Muller, who made her debut on the programme last weekend, will also be seen onstage for the restaging of Dick Lee’s ’70s musical Hotpants in August, where she plays crazy, single mom Suzy de Souza. “She likes to party like Barbarella in the ’70s — I mean the other Barbarella,” she hastily added.
Sports-related Freudian slips aside, her most awkward moment to date happened off camera on the set of the Channel 5 food show The Food Detectives, for which she’s also currently shooting for the second season, which premieres in October.
“It was our very first shoot day,” she recalled. “The episode was about chicken, so we went to a live chicken farm in Malaysia. They told us, ‘Okay, disinfect’ so I thought, sure, it was probably just hand sanitiser or something. No, no, no — you go to a room, get naked with each other and walk through this thing that just sprays all this stuff on you. I was like, wow, you get to know each other really well, really fast! First day of shoot and the whole crew was naked. Of course, men and women did it separately but, still, that was pretty damn awkward.”
It does, however, make for a nice little icebreaker, don’t you think?
“Yeah, it’s like, man, I’ve seen it all!”
