SINGAPORE — Workers’ Party candidate Daniel Goh (picture) yesterday lodged a police report over the poison pen letter about him that was sent to several media outlets and his party leaders on Thursday night.

Writing on his Facebook page after lodging the report on the allegations, which he has denied, the sociologist at the National University of Singapore thanked his supporters for standing by him.

“I am not a singular person anymore, never was, but now I stand on your giant shoulders; you all give me spiritual strength. Let’s move on to the issues at hand,” Associate Professor Goh wrote.

The letter from a sender going by the name of Max Chan spread online on Thursday night, a day after Assoc Prof Goh was introduced as one of the 28 candidates who will be contesting on a WP ticket at next months’ polls.

Some media organisations published articles on the contents of the letter online hours later. Later that night, Assoc Prof Goh refuted the allegations in the letter, describing them as “baseless”. He also questioned the timing of the letter.

The publishing of the articles drew sharp criticism on social media. Some said reports should not have been published when the contents of the letter have not been verified yet. There were also complaints about early versions of the article not including Assoc Prof Goh’s comments, while others felt it should not have been reported on at all.

At a press conference to introduce its third batch of candidates yesterday, Assoc Prof Goh’s party colleagues also came to his defence.

Hougang candidate Png Eng Huat said the party welcomes scrutiny of its candidates, but anybody with evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of Assoc Prof Goh should approach the party.

“If anyone has any evidence, please talk to us. In the past, we have come across such cases, (so) you must show us the evidence. (You) cannot just send us an email — we receive a lot of funny emails, I must say,” he added.

Real-estate agent Ron Tan Jun Yen, who was unveiled as a WP candidate yesterday, also called the allegations “unfair”. He added: “I’ve worked with Dr Goh in the last year, and I truly believe that he is a man of integrity and honesty.” HON JING YI
