Design Hotels’ Carsten Lima namedrops three gorgeous hotels you need to check out
SINGAPORE — If you want to stay in the latest, good-looking hotels or seek out design inspirations, you might want to ask Carsten Lima, Design Hotels area director Asia Pacific, for insider tips. “My job is my hobby — I look around in concept stores, museums, read a lot of magazines and newspapers to see where to go and what could work in our hotels,” shared Lima, who jet-sets across the region to scout for new finds. Even after 26 years of travelling, the Dane has no intention of slowing down. “I still get goosebumps when I step into a property; I get excited when I open a hotel room door,” he added.

Well, who wouldn’t when you’re talking about stylish new properties?
Q: What are some of your favourite cities for inspiration?
A: London, for sure. Not many cities in the world can declare themselves to be a metropolis and London is truly one of those. London is enormous enough for you to be incognito and anyone can blend in with the craziness. I love the boroughs south of River Thames. I don’t have any favourite hangouts. I am never able to remember names. I just like how eclectic and diverse the cultures are.
I love Tokyo too. It’s the pinnacle of civilisation for me. The city has a fast lifestyle but you also find it’s where people take their time to do things well; it’s very elegant and refined. No matter where I look, it’s full of inspiration and the people there are among the most talented creators and strongest visionaries. I like the slight secrecy and mystery of the city.
Q: Since you travel so much, how do you ensure you pack light and breeze through a trip?
A: You can’t ask me that because I bring the same suitcase whether it’s a two-day trip or one that lasts three weeks. I have a full suitcase of things, such as six pairs of shoes and trainers. I bring so many things because I never know what to wear and what the weather will be like. I’m also very particular about my things. I unpack my suitcase the moment I get into a hotel room and hang all my clothes up. I feel you can’t relax in a hotel room completely until the suitcase is out of sight.
Q: Which three Design Hotels in the Asia Pacific region should we check out?
A: Most definitely Hotel Hotel in Canberra. What the hotel is doing there is very interesting: It’s bringing curators who have an understanding of conceptualising spaces and making it liveable. It’s a beautiful hotel. Also, the Ovolo Southside in Hong Kong. It took a very courageous step by breaking away from the norm to locate itself in Aberdeen and transform an old warehouse into a hotel. The Phum Baitang in Siem Reap, which is opening September 1, is just gorgeous with spectacular villas. We’re big fans of Reda Amalou who did the design.
Q: What’s your travel mantra?
A: Stay away from what city guides ask you to do. Don’t worry if you don’t manage to see the Eiffel Tower. Avoid ticking off the must-do list — you get a lot more when you do that. Follow your instincts instead. Serene Lim
