Some 100 works on display at Eames exhibition
You’ve seen or sat in one or at least you’d have wished you had: The Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Molded Plastic Chair, the Plywood Lounge Chair and the Armchair Rocker.
You’ve seen or sat in one or at least you’d have wished you had: The Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Molded Plastic Chair, the Plywood Lounge Chair and the Armchair Rocker.
These are some of the pieces that design power couple Charles and Ray Eames did for furniture company Herman Miller. Some of which have found their way to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, while others have been scattered stylishly in the homes and offices of design-crazed fans. But the couple did a lot more than just things to rest your bums on — they made films, designed shelves, crafted sculptures and even created toys. And it won’t be long before you can see and touch some of their genius with an exhibition at Marina Bay Sands’ ArtScience Museum at the end of the month.
The show, titled Essential Eames: A Herman Miller Exhibition, is based on the book, An Eames Primer, which provides an in-depth look at the lives and work of these designers, whose names are synonymous with groundbreaking 20th century American furniture. More than 100 works will be spread out over nine galleries. Divided according to themes of architecture, exhibition, photography, film and furniture, the works were selected by the late couple’s grandson, Eames Demetrios. Expect a diverse mix ranging from original paintings by Ray Eames to Mathematica, a model explaining mathematical concepts. And of course those lust-worthy chairs — including a specially designed, soft-padded chair for the late Pope, John Paul II.
Essential Eames is also the first design-focused exhibition to be held at the museum. “It is a great fit as we are committed to bringing the best exhibitions from around the world and also bringing those which reflect the intersection between art and science to Singapore,” said Ross Leo, Associate Director of the museum. “With Essential Eames, we have an exhibition that fulfils all of our criteria and beyond.”
There is even something for kids or the young at heart as the Eames’ famed House of Cards will be making an appearance in which different structures can be built by joining a series of cards with six slots each on them. Just for this exhibition, over 1,500 giant House of Cards will be constructed for visitors to try their hand at it.
Hardcore Eames fans would get a chance to meet Demetrios in person as he will be conducting guided tours during the opening weekend for ticket holders as well as a complimentary talk over the same period for those who’ve purchased tickets to Mummy: Secrets Of The Tomb or Essential Eames.
“Charles and Ray Eames are giants of the 20th century whose legacy continues today in the field of design,” said Leo. “Through this, we hope that visitors will be inspired by the iconic design couple’s rich story of creativity.”
Essential Eames: A Herman Miller Exhibition opens to the public on June 29 at the Art Science Museum. Tickets available from Sistic or at the museum.
