Smell the roast: Drop by the ‘Flower cafe’ for pretty blooms and great lattes

SINGAPORE — While we would not go as far to say that this is Singapore’s version of the gorgeous Aoyama Flower Market Tea House in Tokyo, it comes pretty close. Exotic blooms and pretty bouquets fill half the space of this Upper East Coast shop space, and on each table is a floral arrangement that would go oh so well with your latte art.

These perfect Instagram aesthetics all stem from florist Dawn Q partnering coffee joint Stamping Ground to occupy a mezzanine unit along that street. On the second level is an events venue space for rent managed by East Mezzanine.

“After operating out of my house for two years, I was looking for a space. I knew I didn’t want to take up a unit all by myself — that is too scary. It is less daunting when you share a space,” shared Dawn Q’s owner Dawn Quek, who added she got to know about the unit through a family friend.

For Stamping Ground, the timing was also perfect as its lease at Club Street was ending, and the owners thought it was time to take their hole-in-the-wall, takeaway-only outfit in another direction. “Stamping Ground had always wanted a sitting area — the company name means ‘a favourite place or gathering haunt’, where we want people to enjoy and appreciate the space and be surrounded by the like-minded souls with good coffee and good vibes,” revealed co-owner Charlene Chow.

To ensure all three brands were in-sync in nailing the design of their space, the owners sat down together to discuss before hiring an architect to ensure a consistent look. And since opening on July 16, both Dawn Q and Stamping Ground reported that business has been growing. Chow said the residents in the neighbourhood have been very supportive and Quek added that customers have dropped by to pick up flowers before going home, and she has been getting plenty of inquiries.

Stamping Ground and Dawn Q have also worked out a flower jamming package whereby customers can sit at the tables to create their own arrangement while enjoying coffee and pastries. Flower arrangement classes are being conducted above at East Mezzanine with plans to hold coffee workshops as well. The space is open for booking for parties, off-site business meetings and private get-togethers, and there are packages available with services from Dawn Q and Stamping Ground thrown in.

“Ultimately, this arrangement works for us. Customers may decide to buy flowers after first dropping by for coffee, or they find out about the venue above and think about having an event there. We cross-promote one another’s business,” explained Quek. “And it’s also nice when we hear people coming specially because they want to experience the flower cafe!”
