SINGAPORE — Do you hate keying in your credit card details or your address when shopping online? Annoyed you’ve missed out on your favourite website’s flash sale because you found the transaction process too much of a hassle, especially when you’re out and about?

You’re not alone. According to data from Visa, two in three Singaporean shoppers have abandoned a purchase because of the length of time it takes to finish the payment process, or because it was simply too troublesome to give their personal details.

Well, shopaholics can take heart: The credit card company has recently launched its Visa Checkout payment service. Similar to how digital wallet services such as PayPal work, Visa Checkout simply requires you to set up an account, fill in your details and shipping address, and register a credit or debit card with it. Once that’s done, registered users just need to enter their username and password to pay for their transactions on merchant sites signed on to the service, instead of keying in their 16-digit card details and expiry date.

Since Visa Checkout was introduced in the last two years in markets such as the United States, Australia, China and Hong Kong, the service is available for more than 250.000 large and small merchants. Among these are big brands such as such as Barnes & Noble and Hong Kong Airlines.

As for Singapore, Visa Checkout currently has 15 online merchants, including Golden Village, Spizza, Cold Storage, Guardian, Giant, Aviva and Com Gateway. Travel agency Zuji and supermarket chain NTUC will be joining the fold next month. Talks are also underway to add more merchants over the next few months.

“More people are demanding a fast, secure and frictionless way to shop online,” said Ooi Huey Tyng, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei. “Visa Checkout addresses some of the problems faced by online shoppers, enhancing the shopping experience.
