SINGAPORE — What exactly is a Chief Inspiration Officer? Well, you can ask the 18-year-old Taylor Frankel, co-founder of Nudestix, a make-up line consisting primarily of crayons and pencils for the eyes, cheeks and lips.
Frankel, together with her 16-year-old sister Ally and her mother Jenny, created Nudestix in 2013 after Jenny, a former makeup developer for M.A.C, noticed her daughters’ fuss-free approach to their beauty routine.
“And our mum came out with the name CIO. She thought the title was extremely fitting since Ally and I were the inspirations behind Nudestix, and continue to inspire as Nudestix grows,” said the Toronto-based teenager who manages the brand’s Instagram and Snapchat accounts. She has travelled to Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Australia to promote the brand and was in Singapore to launch Nudestix’s new collection at Sephora. While she said the travelling has been fun, she hopes to better appreciate each destination better.
“I am constantly attached to my phone while I’m traveling because of my job. Sometimes, I have to remind myself to come back to the real world and appreciate what is going on at the moment.”
Q: Young girls have a lot of pressure to look good and be popular on social media. What’s your advice to them to not let what they see on social media get to their heads?
A: My advice is there will always be something bigger or better — (but) don’t let that get in the way of your true self. Throughout my Nudestix journey, I have learnt that people love me for me. Your imperfections are what make you perfect. Embrace them!
Q: What’s your beauty regime like when you travel?
A: My beauty travel regime is quite simple since I try to pack as lightly as possible, especially when I’m travelling across the globe to Singapore. Concealer pencil — if I had a makeup BFF, concealer would be it; mascara, lip and cheek pencil in Mystic, Magnetic Eye colour in Angel and Twilight, Glam Glow Hydrating mask and Ole Henriksen facial cloths.
Q: Where in Toronto would you bring visitors to?
A: My favourite place is Queen Street! They have great little cafes and cool indie shops. I would bring visitors to an ice hockey game for sure! You can’t come to Toronto without watching the Maple Leafs.
Q: Tell us your best and worst travel trip.
A: My first-ever trip to Sydney, Australia in October. I absolutely loved it! From cold-pressed juices to Bondi beach, I could definitely picture myself living there. It was also great timing because the Noodle Markets were open. I love noodles! Unfortunately the last time I travelled to Malaysia was during haze season, so I was not able to sightsee or even leave my hotel.
Q: You travel with your mum and sister. How do you ensure peace and fun on the road? Do you guys ever get into major disagreements?
A: Oh yes, we travel tonnes together. Honestly, I think we have just become so accustomed to one another’s company that we’re all very calm and collected together. The biggest disagreements we have is arguing about drawer space, bathroom time or wake-up time. Typical family things! SERENE LIM
