6 indoor activities for the family to beat the heat
SINGAPORE — With the thermometer rising to unbearable digits — you break a sweat just stepping out the door — finding cool family activities to do during our notoriously hot and humid days is no longer a priority, it’s a necessity.
SINGAPORE — With the thermometer rising to unbearable digits — you break a sweat just stepping out the door — finding cool family activities to do during our notoriously hot and humid days is no longer a priority, it’s a necessity.
Going beyond our preferred cool-down activities of eating our weight in ice-cream sandwiches, sitting directly in front of a fan with wet hair and drinking plenty of water, we’ve rounded up a list of cool family fun indoor activities to help beat the heat while having fun at the same time (air-con included).
1. TAKE FLIGHT AT IFLY
This popular indoor skydiving complex lets you float and flip in a state-of-the-art wind tunnel that’s the largest in the world, as it simulates a free fall — without actually falling. It’s perfect for kids (and adults, if we’re being honest) who will get an experience like no other and it is also great for those Instagram moments. Each flight is supervised by fully-qualified instructors, who will train you before you “take off” and keep you on the right track.
iFLY is at 43 Siloso Beach Walk, #01-01, Sentosa. Opening hours: 9am to 9.30pm (Mon, Tues and Thurs to Sun) 11am to 9.30pm (Wed). Call 6571 000 or visit http://www.iflysingapore.com/ for more information.
2. WORK FOR FUN AT KIDZANIA
Welcome to the world of innovative children’s edutainment. Spanning 7,600-sqm over two levels at Palawan Beach Sentosa, KidZania is a theme park with a difference. Instead of thrill rides, it operates as a mini-city for children, where they go and work. Yes, you read right. The idea behind KidZania is that children will experience the world of work via role play with adult “zupervisors” teaching lessons about responsibility, decision-making and teamwork. Children can be firemen, doctors, television presenters, scientists or pilots. The kids get to run around and the adults get to sit back and chill — what’s not to like? KidZania Singapore is at Palawan Kidz City. 31 Beach View #01-01/02. Tickets from S$25 to S$58. http://www.kidzania.com.sg
3. MOSEY AROUND THE SINGAPORE SCIENCE CENTRE
Inquisitive minds will find the 1,000 interactive exhibits in the Science Centre’s 14 galleries a thorough joy. Your little scientists can trek to the centre of the Earth to discover its hidden layers, learn about DNA structures and their functions through the three-dimensional Genome Exhibit or power an engine with just the heat of their palm. There are also optical illusions in the Mind’s Eye gallery to explore, sculptures and water features at the Kinetic Garden, and just catch wide-screen Omnimax documentary movies. 15 Science Centre Road. Opens daily from 10am to 6pm. Get tickets and more information at http://www.science.edu.sg.
4. MARVEL AT MARINE LIFE IN S.E.A AQUARIUM
What better way to cool down than with a total underwater immersion with Nemo and his friends? Okay, you don’t actually need to get wet — although there is a touch pool — but this home to more than 100,000 marine animals spanning more than 800 species is definitely one cool way to beat the heat. The highlight has to be its Open Water Habitat. With its floor-to-ceiling window that makes you feel like you’re on a cavernous ocean floor, it features a variety of sea creatures such as leopard sharks, goliath groupers, manta rays, eagle rays, turtles and yes, several schools of fish. If you like a fancy dinner to go along with this experience, there’s the high-end dining spot called Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora. But we recommend the Ocean Dreams sleepover experience, which includes meals, a guided tour and lets you sleep overnight in front of the Open Ocean habitat (yes, sleeping bags are provided). Talk about sleeping with the fishes. 8 Sentosa Gateway, Sentosa Island. For tickets and more information, visit http://www.rwsentosa.com/Homepage/Attractions/SEAAquarium
5. COOL OFF IN SNOW CITY
Snow in sunny Singapore? You better believe it. Located next to the Science Centre, it’s the ultimate cool-down treat in our hot weather. You’ll be guaranteed a snowball-slingin’ good time in sub-zero temperatures at Singapore’s first permanent indoor snow park. Armed with a special snow “gun” that pumps out the icy stuff, the main Snow Chamber has a giant slide and three-storey high slope for tube sledding. Winter jacket and boots are provided with the admission ticket to the Snow Chamber (if you don’t fancy carting all your own winter gear). 21 Jurong Town Hall Rd. Opens daily 10am to 6pm (last admission at 5pm). http://www.snowcity.com.sg
6. JUMP FOR JOY AT A TRAMPOLINE PARK
Here’s a place that allows your kids to burn of some serious energy without a (literal) meltdown. AMPED Trampoline Park will have your junior jumpers literally bouncing off the walls, all in one cool indoor sanctuary. The trampoline park allows jumpers of all ages (yes, adults are welcome too) to bounce, front or back-flip to their hearts’ content, all in the secure safety of soft foam cubes. There are two outlets — one in River Valley (The Herencia, #02-11, 46 Kim Yam Road) and another at Jurong East (Yo:Ha, Level 2 Sports Hall, 200 Jurong East Ave 1).
