SINGAPORE — She was born in Santiago, studied in New York, and now based in Berlin. This week, the Chilean DJ will be in Singapore for the ongoing Super 0 Season music and experimental art festival happening across four weekends at Gillman Barracks.

The electronic dance mistress revealed that the energy of cities influences her soundscapes. “Cities inspire my music directly. Berlin can be quite grey and cold at times so that makes my music a bit more melancholic than if I were in Chile under the sun, frolicking all day, or in NYC in the middle of the chaos!”

No doubt, she’s excited about what Singapore will bring — even as she played coy about what to expect for her upcoming gig on Saturday. “There’ll be surprises — come early to see what I’ve got in store.” SERENE LIM

How often do you travel to DJ and what do you enjoy most about performing in different countries?

DJ Dinky: I travel almost every week; a few times a week sometimes. I do like to keep one month off or to play in Berlin as I really need that for my sanity! I think every country is a surprise and the fun part is that you really never know what to expect and which records people will react to. It’s very interesting and nice to see different cultures around the world.

Favourite bars to hang out in when in Santiago and Berlin?

In Berlin, Panorama Bar is my favourite. I also really like Wilde Renate — it’s like someone’s house that they converted into a club. I only go to Santiago once a year to visit my family so I’m not so up to date with everything … but the best club for electronic music there is called La Feria. (It’s) been around for more than 15 years and is just great.

How do you keep your energy levels up when you do your gigs, despite jet lag and fatigue?

I can get really tired; sometimes it is just not possible to have much energy. I try to rest and not exhaust myself. If I only have one day (in a city), I prefer to keep my energy for my gig and my audience. If I have a few days, then I try to see the city. I always try to take a “disco” nap before my gig and I don’t like to be in the club too early or leave too late. I don’t drink much and I don’t smoke so I keep quite fit. It is important to save as much energy as possible without being anti-social, of course.

What do you listen to when you travel?

Lots of different music: Vocal jazz like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, soul like Etta James and Minnie Riperton, rock like Ana Calvi , Jimmy Hendrix, and more alternative music like Cocteau Twins or Mazzy Star. I never listen to dance music in my iPod.

DJ Dinky spins April 13 at Gillman Barracks. Tickets are S$18 before 11pm and S$20 at the door. Visit http://super0.sg for more info.
