SINGAPORE — As every triathlete runner worth his or her socks knows, there are a slew of races coming up in Singapore and, if you’re looking for a change of scenery nearby, there are MetaMan Bintan in August and Tour De Bintan in November.
“People are always looking for new challenges, something different from what’s available in their own city,” explained the Frenchwoman, who’s one of the organisers behind the two events.
“This is the second year we’re having MetaMan and we’ve done some fine-tuning like increasing the prize money and it’ll be a higher profile (event with) more elite international names coming, too, such as Cameron Brown and Joanna Lawn.”

TODAY: Would MetaMan Bintan be intimidating to newbies who want to do their first overseas event?
Nathalie Marquet: Not at all. We see many Singaporeans or expats based in Singapore participating due to the accessibility, as you will be travelling with your bike and luggage. As the race starts in Nirwana Gardens, families and friends can also stay there to support you and it could be a mini vacation for everyone. There’s also a generous cut-off time — we close approximately at midnight so you can even crawl if you want!
Q: What got you hooked on doing triathlons and races overseas?
A: I’ve always been active as a kid. I did my first triathlon overseas in 2000 where I swam in the muddy waters of Mekong River — that was quite an experience. I like doing them for the variety they offer and I feel more motivated while training for them.
Q: Any bad experiences on these triathlons?
A: Just once, when my bike had a flat tyre. It was rather upsetting as I was hoping to clock well for that race. I didn’t even bother changing it as I knew I’d lose my placing in the process.
Q: Are you active during your travels, too?
A: Yes, I enjoy travelling to places with lots of open, outdoor spaces as I feel a sense of peace. And I always try to squeeze in a run. I actually think running is a good way to explore a city as you get a general feel of the place, and even if you get lost, you’d be able to find your way back eventually and see lots of new sights in the process. I think packing a pair of running shoes is always useful. You could also get over jetlag by tiring yourself out with a run.
MetaMan Bintan happens on Aug 31. Visit www.metamanbintan.com for more details.
