RADIO 80

Celebrate 80 years of radio with two exhibitions at the National Museum which highlight the industry’s many milestones. There will be a mock-up of a studio, displays and notes about the history of radio in Singapore, as well as a Hall Of Fame, featuring popular radio personalities. Celebrating Radio: Sounds From The Past runs until July 17 at The Salon. In Tune With The Times runs until May 15 at The Concourse, Level 1 and the Glass Atrium on Level 2. Both events are at the National Museum. Admission is free.

 

MARVEL’S CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Participate in Captain America-themed activities this weekend with a game of laser tag, Super Soldier Trampoline, a “Be The Hero” Green Screen photo booth, or catch Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Organised by STGCC, it’s at the Marina Bay Sands’ Event Plaza until April 24.

 

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GEMS

More than 400 pieces of jewellery from the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection and private collectors will be on display at this exhibition. Visitors get a chance to explore the artistic skill required to create these pieces. Until Aug 14 at the ArtScience Museum. Tickets available at Marina Bay Sands’ website.

 

MAGICAL KAMPUNG

Hark back to days of yore with Magical Kampung, organised by GUI, a non-profit organisation. It is inviting visitors to reminisce about the kampung days, with a tour of its Kampung Kampus, as well as customised eco-based workshops and activities for all ages. April 23, 9.30am to 4pm, 91 Lorong Chencharu (nearest MRT: Khatib station).

 

EVERYDAY FOLK MARKET

The inaugural Everyday Folk Market will feature over 50 booths at the Enabling Village, a common space for people with disabilities and the able-bodied at Lengkok Bahru. April 23. Admission is free.

 

MADAGASCAR LIVE!

Catch Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the Hippo and the plotting penguins in this stage production of the popular DreamWorks film. Until April 24 at the Grand Theatre at MasterCard Theatres. Tickets from S$40 available at Marina Bay Sands’ website.

 

CELLULOID VOID: THE LOST FILMS OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA

Get re-acquainted and engage with eight South-east Asian films that have been lost through the passage of time. Featuring important film titles from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, the exhibition looks to highlight the cultural value and historical context of these works, and present their remnants through both original and reproduced archival materials. Until April 24, Level 9 Promenade at the National Library Building, Victoria Street.

 

HANUMAN — THE SUPERHERO MONKEY

This multi-sensory theatre experience tells the story of a superhero monkey who destroys monsters, defeats evil kings and restores order to the world. Until April 30 at KC Arts Centre — Home of the Singapore Repertory Theatre. Tickets from S$25 at SISTIC.

 

GE TAI THE MUSICAL

Written by Jonathan Lim, this show combines the energy of a Chinese concert with the drama of musical theatre. Catch performances by Getai performers Desmond Ng and Hao Hao, as well as international stars such as Zhang Di and Cai Qiu Feng. Until May 29 at the Resorts World Theatre. VOILAH! 2016

GARDEN CITY: 2011-2016

Artist Deanna Ng re-examines the meaning of a garden city with images of Singapore captured at rare moments that reflect how she perceives Singapore — as an urban city within a garden. Until June 12 at the Community Wall at the Esplanade. Free admission.

 

ASEAN PULSE EXHIBITION

This exhibition seeks to engage Singaporeans on the significance of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and highlights how we can capture new opportunities brought about by tighter integration in the region. Until June 26, Singapore Discovery Centre. More information at http://www.sdc.com.sg.

 

SOUTH ASIA AND THE ISLAMIC WORLD

A selection of highlights and new acquisitions from the Asian Civilisation Museum’s South Asian and Islamic art collections are on display in the Foyer on the second floor. This gallery provides visitors an opportunity to explore the arts of Hinduism, Jainism and Islam within the region and beyond. Until June 30, Asian Civilisations Museum. Opening hours: 10am to 7pm (9pm on Fridays).

 

NATIONAL GALLERY SINGAPORE — REFRAMING MODERNISM. For the first time, modern artworks from South-east Asia will be exhibited alongside works from Paris’ Centre Pompidou collection, featuring European artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Wassily Kandinsky and South-east Asian artists such as Latiff Mohidin, Affandi and Le Pho. Until July 17 at the National Gallery Singapore. Tickets at S$25 are available at SISTIC.

 

NAVY MUSEUM

Come and learn more about the Singapore Navy – how it began, the challenges the early sailors faced and how the Navy has transformed itself into a fighting unit. There are interactive computer games that let you test your mettle, as well as static displays of guns and other components taken from our early warships, including those from onf the first navy ships, the RSS Panglima. The Navy Museum is at 112 Tanah Merah Coast Road (just outside the Changi Naval Base, next to the SAF Yacht Club). Open Mondays to Fridays 9am to 5pm; Saturdays 9am to 3pm. Closed on Sundays. HEADS UP: SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK — ROMEO AND JULIET

Shakespeare In The Park returns with a staging of the ultimate story of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, directed by Daniel Slater. From April 27 to May 22 at Fort Canning Park. Tickets from S$40 available at SISTIC.

 

HEADS UP: SINGAPORE COMEDY FRINGE FESTIVAL 2016

Presented by The Comedy Club Asia, this five-day comedy event will feature some of the biggest talents in standup comedy, including Harith Iskander from Malaysia, Paul Ogata from the USA, Pete Johansson from Canada, Matt Kirshen from the UK and others. From April 26 to 30 at SOTA Drama Theatre. Tickets available at Peatix from S$28. All shows are M18.
