SINGAPORE – A Ngee Ann Polytechnic student has gone viral for taking one of Singapore's longest bus rides, from Woodlands to Changi Airport and back, in order to study on the bus.

In a video posted to TikTok on Sunday (July 7), Mr Neo Jia Yu, 18, a second year mass communication student, shared his attempt at being productive on a bus.

In the video, Mr Neo, who has the user name "keerigiri", said he had multiple outstanding assignments to complete and wanted a change of scenery to be more productive.

“Or more accurately, scenery that kept changing,” he said in the commentary with his video.

The post had garnered more than 467,400 views and 390 comments as of Wednesday afternoon.

A quick search on Google informed him that bus 858 was the longest bus ride in Singapore although some netizens suggested other routes may be longer.

Bus 858 has 75 stops and a distance of 73.4km which Mr Neo estimated would take three to four hours.

He boarded the bus at 12.50pm and took around an hour to reach Changi Airport. The bus left the airport at 2.30pm on its journey back to Woodlands.

In the video, Mr Neo said the bus reached Woodlands bus interchange at 3.45pm. Hence, the total time taken was around three hours.

He was surprised by how fast the ride was but added that he had taken the bus on a Monday afternoon, during low traffic hours.

He said the bus was also relatively empty most of the time.

Admittedly, Mr Neo said he was able to finish some work but had to use a lot of mobile data and faced difficulties keeping his laptop steady.

Viewers came forward to suggest longer bus rides that he could try.

One TikTok user wrote: “Bus 8 longer. Starts from Tuas Link to Pasir Ris.”

Another said: “I've taken 67 from CCK (Choa Chu Kang) at 5:45PM, reached Bedok at 9:30PM. and it wasn't even the final stop.”

“Try 963 from Woodlands to HarbourFront. 1.5 hours journey at peak hours. 2.5 hours if there is an accident at BKE!,” one user wrote

In response to TODAY’s queries on Wednesday (July 10), Mr Neo said that as a result of the comments, he now knows of longer bus routes and might do this challenge again on a different bus.

Some netizens were curious about how much the bus fare was.

One user asked: “How much was your bus fee? That’s the one I'm interested in.”

Mr Neo told TODAY that he used his student concession card and was charged the maximum chargeable fee of 70 cents.

The only downside? In his commentary, Mr Neo said that by the end of the ride "my butt was a bit numb".
