SINGAPORE — Singaporean auteur Royston Tan, best known films like SG50 omnibus 7 Letters and Getai extravaganza 881, unveiled his video installation called A Moment of Unity, the newest addition to the We Built A Nation exhibit curated by the National Museum of Singapore.

The commissioned video compiles images of Singaporeans captured by photographers on the ground and takes a look back at what happened during the week of national mourning last year.

Tan shared that the inspiration behind the video, and behind the success of Singapore, is “our people”.

“I feel that, when Mr Lee passed – and people came together to pay him tribute – and stood together as one, it really reflected the Singapore spirit,” he said.

“So, for this installation, I selected photographs that reflected the outpouring of emotions. The installation itself, using modern technology, give the photographs a new life. I hope that it not only honours a great man, but also uplifts our spirit and prepares us to face our future together”.

We Built A Nation chronicles the roles that Mr Lee and our pioneer generation of leaders played in developing Singapore’s economy, foreign policy and diplomacy, security and defence, education and infrastructure.

A Moment in Unity will be shown at the National Museum’s Concourse Gallery, until Oct 2.
