NAYPYIDAW – Singapore begin their quest for that elusive first-ever gold medal in men’s football at the SEA Games when they take on Laos in their opening Group A match tonight at the Zayarthiri Stadium in Naypyidaw.
The Lions are the favourites but minnows Laos cannot be underestimated. Two months ago, they defeated Singapore’s “B” team 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium and were unlucky to lose 1-0 to the Lions 48 hours later.
Failure to secure three points tonight will see the Lions face an uphill task to reach the semi-finals, as they still have to play Vietnam and defending champions Malaysia in the coming week.
