SINGAPORE — Almost twice the number of funpacks — 220,000 packs — will be distributed to spectators of this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) shows, previews and rehearsals, compared with the 130,000 given out last year.

And for the first time, the funpacks will come in six different colour combinations — such as green-orange and blue-red — and contain 30 items, including old-favourites like the Singapore flag and scarf, as well as an LED bracelet that lights up to the tempo of music, the NDP executive committee revealed yesterday.

“The number of funpacks prepared varies from year to year. This year, other than the spectators, funpacks are also prepared for initiatives that encourage active participation by Singaporeans from all walks of life, such as the ‘Fly Our Flag’ contest, as well as (for) parade participants,” said Military Expert 6 (ME6) Tan Boon Hong, Chairman of the Logistics and Finance Committee.

The funpack design is the brainchild of 15 students from the Institute of Technical Education College Central’s School of Design and Media, who started work last October, with the guidance of the NDP creative team and a group of lecturers.

“We wanted something simple and functional. That’s why we chose the backpack design. The vibrant colours will not only enhance the look of NDP but also bring out the fun atmosphere,” said ME6 Tan.

The multi-functional funpack, which can carry a weight of more than 6kg and is water resistant, will contain button badges to be pinned onto the pack. Other items in the pack include a clap banner which can emit noise, light stick, foldable fan and tattoo sticker.

“The students have worked very hard and have shown great commitment. But it’s also more than the end product, it’s the journey that matters,” said ME6 Tan. Paul Lim
