SINGAPORE — He first used vulgar phrases on police officers who wanted to speak to his younger brother at Bugis Street, before beating up his younger sister’s boyfriend in a separate incident the following month.
For his actions, Muhammad Aliff Mohamed Hanif was sentenced to nine weeks’ jail on Friday (Oct 11).
The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of criminal intimidation and another charge of causing hurt to his sister’s boyfriend. One other charge of using abusive words on a public servant was taken into consideration for sentencing.
‘I GUESS YOU ARE BRAINLESS’
The court heard that Aliff and his family were near Bugis Village on the afternoon of Aug 2, 2017 when a team of police officers came across them.
The officers were patrolling the area and had been tasked to conduct random spot checks.
They decided to speak to Aliff’s brother, uhammad Adam Mohamed Hanif, and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
Adam instantly turned around and swiped the officer’s hand away, shouting that the policeman had no right to touch him.
As Adam became increasingly aggressive, the officers kept asking him to calm down but were met with a barrage of verbal insults.
Aliff, who was standing behind his brother, threatened one of the officers by pointing at him and saying: “You don’t get involved, I break your hand (then) you know.”
Court documents showed that some time later, Aliff told the same officer: “You shut up, you. You stop it with your warning. Who the f*** are you to give someone a warning? Your blue uniform is not bulletproof, you know.”
He also said: “Use your f***ing brains, lah, you have no f***ing brains. I guess you are brainless, that’s why you got this uniform.”
ASSAULTED SISTER’S BOYFRIEND
The next month on Sept 15, 2017, Aliff and his brothers — Adam and Muhammad Adel Mohamed Hanif — assaulted their younger sister’s 18-year-old boyfriend.
The brothers were unhappy about the relationship, in particular, because the victim had sent their sister an indecent photograph.
That afternoon, the couple were chatting with the girl's cousin at the void deck of a block of flats in Boon Lay before they decided to leave at 7pm.
They were told to wait as her brothers wanted to speak to the victim. When the trio arrived at the void deck, they slapped, kicked and punched the victim repeatedly before telling him to leave.
The boyfriend went to Changi General Hospital for medical treatment the next morning and was diagnosed with a nasal bone fracture and bleeding in his ear. He was given four days of medical leave.
Adam was sentenced to 11 weeks’ jail last month, while Adel was given a warning for his role in the assault.
In mitigation, Aliff’s lawyer said that his client was genuinely remorseful and had “taken steps to reform his ways”, having secured a job after he is released from prison.
For causing hurt, Aliff could have been jailed up to two years, fined up to S$5,000, or both. A similar punishment applies to criminal intimidation.
