SINGAPORE — After a two-month break, Car-Free Sunday will return this week and allow cyclists and pedestrians to take over a 5.5km stretch spanning the Civic District and the Telok Ayer conservation area.
The event was last held in October 2017. From 8am to noon on Sunday (Jan 28), participants can walk, jog and cycle around the area without having to worry about vehicular traffic, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said in a press release on Wednesday (Jan 24).
A range of walking tours, cultural and outdoor activities have also been lined up, including line dancing, hula hoop clinics, floorball and Zumba.
With Chinese New Year around the corner, the Telok Ayer conservation area will host a series of festive activities. Some of the performances include interactive puppet shows and lion-dance performances by the Singapore Hok San Association along Telok Ayer Street.
Subsequent editions of the Car-Free Sunday for this year will run in March, May, July, October and December this year. The event is held on the last weekend of each month.
URA’s chief executive officer Lim Eng Hwee said he is encouraged to see continued active involvement from the community for the event.
“It has provided an opportunity for everyone, young and old, to experience the city in a different way,” said Mr Lim. “This is possible only with the continued support of our community partners and supporters and I hope to see more people joining in to make future editions even more exciting.”
Car-Free Sunday, which was first introduced in 2016, is a community initiative by the URA, Land Transport Authority, National Parks Board, National Arts Council, Health Promotion Board, Sport Singapore and Singapore Land Authority.
