SINGAPORE — The driver involved in the car crash at Tanjong Pagar Road early Saturday (Feb 13) morning that killed five people was believed to be speeding before his car crashed into a shophouse and caught fire, preliminary police investigations have found.

The Singapore Police Force said in a statement that at 5.41am, it was alerted to an accident involving a car along the road.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the car, driven by a 29-year old male driver with four male passengers on board, was believed to have sped along the said location before colliding into a shophouse and caught fire,” they said.

“A 26-year-old woman, who is believed to be known to the driver of the car had attempted to assist the driver and the passengers after the accident.” 

The woman suffered severe burns to her body and was conscious when conveyed to Singapore General Hospital. 

The driver and the passengers, aged 26 to 29, were pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force had earlier said that it was called to the scene at the same time, and had extinguished the fire with three water jets and one compressed air foam backpack.

A video of a white car speeding down Tanjong Pagar Road has been making its rounds on social media.
