SINGAPORE — Eng’s Wanton Noodles, an eatery along Tanjong Katong Road, was allowed to resume operations from Monday (June 28) after a six-week suspension, following reports that its customers suffered from gastroenteritis.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) in a joint statement on Monday said that the outlet had complied with rectification measures specified by SFA.  

This included disposing of all ready-to-eat food, thawed food and perishable food items. 

The shop has also cleaned and sanitised its premises including all equipment and utensils.

“Food handlers who will be involved in food preparation have since re-attended and passed the Basic Food Hygiene course,” they added.

The authorities had previously received 68 reports of gastroenteritis from customers who had consumed food at Eng’s between May 14 and 17.

Gastroenteritis, which is commonly associated with food poisoning or “stomach flu”, is the inflammation of the stomach or the intestines, with sufferers having symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Those affected either sought outpatient treatment, self-medicated or recovered without treatment. No one was hospitalised.

Investigations into the cause of the illness are ongoing.

In their statement, SFA and MOH said that customers who come across poor hygiene practices in food establishments are advised to avoid patronising such outlets and submit details to www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback so that the authorities may carry out follow-up investigations.
