SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain Giant is expanding its Tuesday storewide discounts for seniors to apply every weekday until July 30.

The 3 per cent discounts will be offered to those aged 60 and above and will take effect from next Monday (June 14).

In a statement on Friday, Dairy Farm Group, the chain’s owner, said that with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, shoppers will be more mobile again.

On Thursday, the authorities announced that Singapore will be entering Phase Three (Heightened Alert) in stages from June 14, after a month of tighter restrictions under Phase Two (Heightened Alert).

Mr Lee Yik Hun, Dairy Farm’s marketing director of Southeast Asia Food, said that the group hopes “the introduction of this expansion gives our seniors the flexibility, freedom and convenience in shopping any weekday”.

Dairy Farm also owns the Cold Storage supermarket chain as well as 7-Eleven convenience stores in Singapore.

The announcement comes a week after a TODAY reader wrote a letter to suggest that rival supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice expand its programme that offers similar discounts to senior shoppers.

The letter writer, Mr Paul Wee Kian Nghee, said the discounts — of up to 3 per cent — were being offered only between every Monday and Wednesday.

He added that offering discounts on more days would help reduce crowding at the supermarket, which would be beneficial in view of the ongoing pandemic and the need to adhere to safe distancing measures to mitigate the risk of spreading the disease.

FairPrice Group responded that discounts are offered in the first half of the week to cater to seniors so that they do not need to jostle with the typically busier crowds at their stores towards the second half of the week and weekends.

It added that the exclusive discounts were supposed to have stopped at the end of last year, but were again extended by another year.

In a letter to TODAY, Dairy Farm’s Mr Lee said Giant was already working on its plan to offer senior discounts on more days of the week when Mr Wee’s letter was published.
