SINGAPORE — He would sneak into a unisex staff toilet at the hospital where he worked and take photos or video of his female colleagues in various states of undress using his phone.
His activities only came to light when a 24-year-old colleague — with whom he had worked alongside for two years — caught him red-handed on May 11 last year.
Investigations revealed he had done this to at least seven other female victims in the same month.
The 27-year-old male nurse was sentenced to 12 weeks’ jail on Wednesday (June 26), after pleading guilty to four counts relating to insulting the modesty of a woman. Four other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
The Singaporean male nurse, as well as the hospital that he worked at, cannot be named due to a gag order.
VOYEUR LET OUT ‘OH S***’ WHEN CAUGHT
Court documents stated that on May 11 last year, the male nurse had entered the unisex toilet at the hospital’s emergency department at about 3.45pm.
He went into a cubicle next to the one that his victim, a fellow nurse he was attracted to, was in.
He then switched on the video mode on his mobile phone and slid it underneath the divider separating their cubicles.
She noticed the phone when she bent down to put on her shoes after changing out of her scrubs.
That was when she heard a man say “oh s***” before he retracted his hand that was holding the phone.
He went back to work, while she lodged a police report thereafter.
The male nurse watched the video once before deleting it out of fear that he would get caught.
GIRLFRIEND STILL INTENDS TO MARRY HIM
Deputy Public Prosecutor Shenna Tjoa asked for a 14-week sentence, pointing out that the case involved an element of abuse of trust given that he preyed on his fellow colleagues.
His lawyer, Ms Charlene Nah, sought a six-week sentence for her client instead, arguing that there was no high degree of planning and premeditation as he did not use any sophisticated devices such as pinhole cameras.
Ms Nah also said that her client remained a “productive and contributing member of society”, working part time as a swimming coach, a nurse and a surveyor in the construction business even after investigations commenced and he was terminated from service.
Adding that he was still “very young”, Ns Nah said that his actions were a result of his “youthful foolishness” and “spontaneity” which was “completely out of character”.
The male nurse’s girlfriend has also forgiven him for his actions, Ms Nah said. They intend to get married and start a family in the near future, the lawyer wrote in her submissions.
District Judge Adam Nakhoda, however, pointed out that the offences were not a “one-off”.
“While no planning or sophisticated devices were used besides a phone, nonetheless, the accused knew what he wanted to do,” he said.
“He was looking for victims.”
