SINGAPORE — When a bus driver scolded him for recklessly riding his e-scooter on the road, Ryan Thomas Mission and his friend began punching him.

Mission, a Singaporean, also kneed his girlfriend in the abdomen one day, after she asked him to return their two-month-old child to her.

On Monday (March 4), the 25-year-old was sentenced to one week behind bars and fined S$2,000 for his actions.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of causing hurt to SBS Transit bus driver Lau Teck Boon and Ms Lydia Lim, as well as stealing a S$49 black jacket from a shop in Bugis Village.

The court heard that on Jan 22 last year, Mr Lau was driving SBS bus service 14 along Commonwealth Avenue West towards Clementi MRT Station.

In his right wing mirror, he saw Mission riding his e-scooter at a fast speed, cutting out abruptly from the minor road of Clementi Avenue 1 into Commonwealth Ave West.

Mission then stopped his e-scooter behind a van driven by his friend, Muhammad Asyiq Noor Muhammad.

Mr Lau stopped his bus at the traffic-light junction when the lights were red, alighted and approached Mission. He warned Mission that his act of cutting across the lanes of a major road was very dangerous and could result in an accident.

Mission then grabbed the older man by the neck and punched him in the head. Asyiq also joined in the attack. The duo punched him multiple times, causing him to fall to the ground, where Mission kicked him a few times before they left the scene.

Mr Lau was taken to the National University Hospital, where he was given four days of outpatient sick leave.

For his role in the attack, Asyiq, 21, was sentenced to 15 months of supervised probation in January this year.

The court also heard that on Feb 12 last year, Mission got into an argument with his girlfriend, Ms Lim. The couple have a child together, who was two months old then.

She called the police for help from the changing room of a clothing shop in JCube mall, where they just had an argument.

When two police officers arrived and talked to them, Mission took the baby from Ms Lim’s arms and began walking away towards Block 1, Jurong Gateway Road.

Ms Lim and one of the officers followed him. After walking for about 15 minutes, Mission became aggressive and agitated.

Fearing for her baby’s safety, Ms Lim tried to take the infant back, but he used his knee to hit her in the abdomen area. The officers then calmed him down and took the baby from him unharmed.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Mission could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined up to S$5,000.
