SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old man was arrested on Friday (Aug 20) for his alleged involvement in a case of aggravated rape.

He will be charged on Saturday and a court order will be sought to remand the man for further investigations, the police said in a statement.

At 9.35pm on Thursday, the police received a call informing them that a 52-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted by a man in a building in Toa Payoh.

The suspect fled the scene after that.

The woman suffered minor injuries from the alleged assault, the police said.

Using footage taken from closed-circuit television and police cameras, police officers from several departments managed to trace the man’s escape route and identify him quickly, they added.

He was later arrested at a residential unit in Ang Mo Kio within 10 hours after the report was made.

If convicted, he could be jailed between eight and 20 years, and receive up to 12 strokes of the cane.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee, director of the Criminal Investigation Department, commended the officers involved for the "swift arrest" of the suspect, who had allegedly committed "a brazen act of sexual assault".

“The police take a serious view of sexual crimes and will spare no effort to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly to face the full brunt of the law.”
