SINGAPORE — A 43-year-old man was charged on Monday (Dec 2) with setting off fireworks in Little India during the Deepavali weekend in October.

Sivasarvanan Suppiah Murugan faces one charge under the Dangerous Fireworks Act, which prohibits such pyrotechnics from being discharged here.

According to court documents, the Singaporean allegedly set off one box of Happy Boom fireworks at about 12.35am on Oct 27. He is accused of doing so at the junction of Campbell Lane and Madras Street.

The police earlier said that no injuries were reported.

It was the second time that day that fireworks were set off in Singapore. In a separate incident, a 38-year-old man was arrested for allegedly doing so in Jurong West.

Sivasarvanan told the court that he intends to plead guilty, and will return on Dec 31. He remains out on bail of S$5,000.

For discharging dangerous fireworks, he could be jailed up to two years, fined up to S$10,000 or both.

Earlier this year, another man who set off four sets of fireworks on Deepavali last year and lied to the police about it was jailed for three weeks and fined S$5,000. 

Jeevan Arjoon, 29, pleaded guilty to doing so in Yishun and had tried to push the blame on his friend for buying them.
