SINGAPORE — With all 89 candidates from the People’s Action Party (PAP) introduced, PAP organising secretary Ng Eng Hen said no surprises are expected come Nomination Day on Tuesday.

“Where we say (the candidates) will stand, that’s our plan,”he told reporters after a walkabout at Bishan North this morning where the PAP slate for Bishan-Toa Payoh was present except Mr Chee Hong Tat, who was at house visits.

Dr Ng also commented on the Workers’ Party response to the Ministry of National Development yesterday, which found that the former managing agent of Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) FM Solutions and Services (FMSS) has been “grossly profiteering” off the town council which is its sole client. WP had called the accusations “careless” and questioned the release of the statement, saying the authorities had not completed its review of the findings by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority.

To that, Dr Ng said that this information was in the “public interest”.

“Whether it complied with ethics, there’s a need to reassure Singaporeans that whenever we are in charge of public monies..we are going to keep to integrity. We are not saying things won’t go wrong, it will, but the way we address it is crucial,” he said. “Are they going to comply with the letter of the law? Or do they want to be seen as doing the right thing? If you are not happy with the processes, you raise the point. It’s an important fundamental that the pioneer generation has left us.”

He likened corruption to a cancer, which if left unchecked would spread everywhere.

“We should catch it in the bud. We weed it out.. Root it out,” he said.

He was also asked about the Singapore People’s Party slate for Bishan-Toa Payoh, which was unveiled this morning. To that, he said that the team does not take anything for granted and welcomes the contest.

He added:”The mood is better than in 2011. When we walk around, people are more direct..saying they will support us as a party. But, we take nothing for granted.”
