SINGAPORE — This year’s Primary 1 registration will be carried out from June 30 to Oct 29 and will continue to be done online, as it was last year, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said in a statement on Thursday (May 20).

Schools have just started conducting home-based learning this week due to a rise in community infections. 

More than a dozen primary school students from various schools have also tested positive for Covid-19, several of whom have been linked to Learning Point tuition centre.

MOE added that the registration exercise will not be affected by the ongoing review that is looking at how to increase the number of places reserved for children living near a school. 

Parents registering their child under the priority phases — 1, 2A(1), 2A(2) and 2B — must submit an online application form that will be made available on MOE’s Primary 1 registration website.

Those registering under Phases 2C and 2C Supplementary should use the existing Primary One Internet System.

Both registration modes require users to use their SingPass, the national passcode system for government e-services. 

Primary 1 registration exercises are held over several phases. Phase 1, for example, is reserved for children applying for a school where their older sibling is studying, while Phase 2B is for children of parents who are volunteers at the school, belong to a church or clan linked to the school or are active community leaders.

The dates for the different phases of registration can be found on MOE’s website. The list of vacancies available for each primary school will be updated by mid-June.

Attending national primary schools, including the government-funded special education schools, is compulsory under the law for Singaporeans residing in the country.

Children born between Jan 2, 2015 and Jan 1, 2016 must take part in the upcoming exercise or enrol in the Junior 1 or Primary 1 programme of a special education school.

Starting Thursday, parents may download MOE’s Parents Gateway application on their mobile devices using their SingPass account, where they will receive updates and information on the registration process.

MOE also said that upgrading plans at two schools have either been put on hold or delayed.

Bukit View Primary School, which was scheduled to move to a holding site from January next year, will remain at its site at 18 Bukit Batok Street 21 while MOE reviews its upgrading plans.

The other, St Margaret’s Primary School, is facing upgrading delays and will continue operation from its holding site for another year until December 2023.
