SINGAPORE — A Singaporean man has gone missing while diving in waters off Pulau Sangiang in Banten, Indonesia last Sunday (Nov 3).

The Singapore embassy in Jakarta is in contact with the family of the missing diver, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The other two missing divers are reportedly Chinese nationals.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported that the three missing men were part of a group of seven who were on holiday at Pulau Sangiang.

Six of them went on a group diving excursion around the island while one was snorkelling, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Indonesian news website Suara reported that the six had dived in two groups. The three members of the first group returned safely, while the second group went missing.

The Straits Times reported that the Singaporean was identified by Basarnas as Wang Bingyang, while the two Chinese men are Qin Xuetao and Tian Yu.

"The (Singapore) embassy has also been liaising closely with the Indonesian authorities, who are coordinating search and rescue operations," the MFA spokesperson said, adding that a consular officer is on the ground to provide assistance and support.

Ten divers have been deployed in a joint effort by Basarnas and the Indonesia’s police and navy to search for the missing men.

Mr Zainal Arifin, head of the Banten chapter of Basarnas, said that five ships belonging to the Indonesian navy and Basarnas are combing the area, and a helicopter is searching from the air. AGENCIES
