SINGAPORE — A non-profit arts organisation here has galvanised Singaporeans home and abroad to submit a video of themselves singing the popular National Day theme song, Home, composed by singer-songwriter Dick Lee.

The virtual choir project by Voices of Singapore saw more than 900 submissions from Singaporeans in 26 different countries, including those in the Netherlands, Turkey and the United States.

In a press release on Tuesday (April 14), the organisation said that it had launched the project to “provide a platform for Singaporeans all over the world to unite through song”.

Participants ranged in age from five to 80, and snippets of their choral contributions were “woven professionally” into a music video, it said.

The project, supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), also saw Singapore artistes taking part, including Nathan Hartono, Shigga Shay, Charlie Lim, Jasmine Sokko, Yung Raja, Fariz Jabba, Joie Tan and Tan Wei Tian.

Voices of Singapore said that it wanted to bring a glimmer of hope during this time when the world is gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project title, Gathering Home, As One, broadly signifies the coming together of a Singapore family, and “using the gathering of voices to represent the unique gifts of diverse Singaporeans to build a pandemic-resilient nation through unity”, it said.

“(We also hope the video provides) comfort specifically to Singaporeans who are currently unable to return home due to reasons including quarantines or border restrictions,” it added.

Lee, whose song was first sung at the 1998 National Day Parade by Singapore singer Kit Chan, said: “I'm so glad that Home can be a uniting factor for Singaporeans during these trying times.”

Mr Keith Tan, the chief executive officer at STB, said that the statutory board is “proud to support this moving and unifying project by Voices of Singapore”.

“This simple yet powerful initiative brought together so many Singaporeans from all over the world to remind us of how special our home is. During these challenging times, we can still come together and lift each other up, and music is the perfect way to do so,” he said.
