SINGAPORE — Telco TPG Telecom launched its first commercial mobile plan for users in Singapore on Tuesday (March 31), touting it as the “best mobile plan offer” at S$10 for 50GB of data.

The SIM-only plan comes with 50GB of data, 300 minutes of local talk time and 30 local SMS.

It added that a prepaid plan will be launched at a later date for consumers.

In its press release, TPG said that those on the SIM-only plan “do not have to worry about bill shocks”.

“Excess data is charged at S$1 per extra GB which is just a fraction of the typical S$10 per extra GB charged by the industry,” TPG said, adding that the mobile subscription is valid for 30 days and is automatically renewed.

Those interested in the mobile plan can register on the company’s website and collect their SIM cards at designated collection centres if they are successful.

TPG added that new subscriptions to its free service trial will end immediately with Tuesday’s commercial launch of its mobile plan.

In December 2018, TPG launched a free trial mobile plan, which started a price war among the telcos.

Mr Richard Tan, TPG Singapore’s acting chief executive officer, said that based on valuable feedback from its service trial subscriber base, “consumers here want to have easy-to-understand yet attractive mobile plans with no hidden charges”.

In comparison, Singtel offers a SIM-only 20GB plan that comes with 150 minutes of talk time and 500 SMS for S$25. M1 offers a 30GB that comes with 1,000 minutes of talk time and 1,000 SMS for S$25 while StarHub offers a S$25 SIM-only plan which comes with 5GB of data and 100 minutes of talk time.

As for a comparison of signal and download speeds, international mobile analytics firm Opensignal found in July last year that TPG’s speed and signal strength lagged behind that of M1, Singtel and StarHub.
