SINGAPORE — Two suspected drug offenders will be charged in court on Thursday (Oct 10) with firearms offences, after a weapon was found by the authorities in one of the men’s Jurong West flat.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and the Singapore Police Force said that a 24-year-old man will be charged with possessing a firearm while the second man, aged 25, will be charged with consorting with a person carrying arms.
On Oct 7, the police had received information from CNB indicating that the 24-year-old man had a dangerous weapon with him.
The police, CNB and the Criminal Investigation Department — with the support of the Special Operations Command and the Police Intelligence Department — mounted a joint operation and conducted extensive intelligence probes.
The police and CNB then moved in to arrest the 24-year-old suspected drug offender at the void deck of his residential block in the vicinity of Jurong West Street 72 on Oct 8.
He was then escorted up to his flat where a search was conducted.
“In his unit, the firearm was recovered. No drugs were found,” the statement said.
The police and CNB added that further investigations showed that the second man was suspected to have “previously knowingly remained in the company of the first man” despite being aware that he was in unlawful possession of a firearm.
He was arrested on Oct 9 at 2.25am along Woodlands Street 13, the authorities said.
Investigations are ongoing.
If found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm, the 24-year-old man could be jailed for at least five years and be given at least six strokes of the cane. If convicted of consorting with the man in possession of a firearm, the 25-year-old man is liable for the same punishment.
