SINGAPORE — A teenager thought that he could get away with filming a woman relieving herself at a community club’s toilet, but his father saw photographs posted by police of him fleeing the scene and turned the 14-year-old boy in.
For insulting the modesty of a woman and for stealing a bottle of alcohol in a separate, more recent incident, Muhammad Nur Haiqel Shazali, now 16, was sentenced to 21 months’ “split probation” in the State Courts on Thursday (Sept 26). He pleaded guilty to both charges.
During his probation, consisting of 18 months of intensive probation and three months supervised, he is to remain indoors from 9pm to 6am. He is also required to perform 160 hours of community service and to reside at the Singapore Boys’ Hostel for a period of 12 months.
He has to undergo random urine tests and be placed on electronic tagging for a period of six months upon discharge from the hostel, or until his National Service enlistment.
The court also ordered him to attend a court review on Jan 28, 2020. A bond of S$5,000 was imposed on his parents to ensure their son’s good behaviour during the probationary period.
‘WANTED TO KNOW WHAT SHE WAS DOING’
Court documents stated that the offence happened just after midnight on June 21, 2017 at Anchorvale Community Club, where Haiqel had followed a 20-year-old woman into the female toilet.
Investigations revealed that he wanted to know what the victim was doing in the toilet.
The victim said that she was alerted to Haiqel’s presence when he hit his hand against the toilet cubicle door as he was filming her, which caused her to look up.
She started screaming in response and Haiqel fled the scene.
The victim made a report about three hours later at Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre.
Haiqel was caught on surveillance camera entering and leaving the female toilet at the community centre, so this allowed the police to post photos of him online.
Haiqel’s father, who was not named in the court documents, saw the police appeal and took his son to the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre. It was not stated when this happened.
STOLE A BOTTLE OF VODKA
Haiqel was also charged with theft in a separate incident on the evening of June 6 this year.
He stole a bottle of vodka from a Sheng Siong supermarket outlet along Anchorvale Road and consumed the drink at the foot of a nearby block of flats before he discarded the bottle.
Haiqel’s theft was captured by the supermarket’s surveillance camera. He has since made full restitution of S$29.
