SINGAPORE — Moments after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Tuesday (June 23) that Singapore will be going to the polls, the Workers’ Party (WP) put up a teaser video featuring 12 people who are a mix of party leaders, new and familiar faces. They include a former candidate from another political party who created a stir in the 2011 General Election (GE).
Ms Nicole Seah, 33, who contested for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC) under the National Solidarity Party in the 2011 polls, was in the 15-second video published on WP’s Facebook page.
The video contained no other information aside from its title, GE2020: Coming Soon, and it prompted online talk on whether Ms Seah would be running under WP's banner in the coming GE.
It is understood that Ms Seah has been volunteering with WP for some time. During GE2011, the NSP team she was with received 43.4 per cent of the vote at Marine Parade GRC and lost to the People’s Action Party that was led by then Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
Absent from WP's video were other Members of Parliament (MP) from WP-held Aljunied GRC such as Mr Chen Show Mao, Mr Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap and former party chief Low Thia Khiang.
It was announced on Tuesday that Nomination Day for political parties to submit the paperwork for candidates running in the election will be on June 30 and Polling Day, which will be a public holiday, is set for July 10.
A few opposition parties have started unveiling their candidates for the coming GE, but WP has so far kept its cards close to its chest.
Ms Seah could not be reached for comments. TODAY has sent queries to WP on the video.
