SINGAPORE — The police said on Wednesday (Oct 20) that they have been unable to identify the case of a rape victim whose alleged complaints over her treatment by police were raised by Workers’ Party Member of Parliament (MP) Raeesah Khan in Parliament in August.
In a statement, the police said they had reached out to Ms Raeesah for more details on the case but have not heard back from her. In Parliament earlier this month, the Sengkang Group Representation Constituency MP had cited confidentiality as her reason for not disclosing further details of the case, which she had first brought up in Parliament in August.
The police said that their Serious Sexual Crime Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department, which investigates rape offences, had sent an email to Ms Raeesah on Oct 7, requesting her to get in touch with the police by Oct 14 to arrange for an interview.
“She was assured that the police would do everything possible to safeguard the victim’s identity from public disclosure,” the police said.
She was then sent a reminder email on Oct 15 to get in touch with the authorities by Oct 18.
“The police have still not heard from (Ms Raeesah),” they said.
“(She) has so far not substantiated her allegations against the police officers with further details on the case.”
TODAY has sought comment from Ms Raeesah on the matter.
Speaking in Parliament on Aug 3, Ms Raeesah had said that she accompanied a 25-year-old rape victim to make a police report three years ago. The victim had come out crying, as the police officer had allegedly made comments about the way she was dressed and the fact that she had been drinking.
On Oct 4, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam had asked Ms Raeesah to provide more information to assist the police on the case. These details include the police station, the month the report was filed, and other details.
Ms Raeesah responded that the incident happened three years ago and she did not want the victim to be traumatised again, and declined to respond to further questions by Mr Shanmugam asking for more details, citing confidentiality.
Mr Shanmugam also said that the police would be interviewing Ms Raeesah regarding her allegations.
In the statement on Wednesday, the police said that they had “made an extensive search” to identify the case, but could not find such a case, or the officers allegedly involved.
“We cannot confirm that such an incident actually took place,” the police added.
