SINGAPORE — Following Monday’s Boston Marathon blasts that left three dead and more than 170 injured, the police in Singapore are “monitoring” the bombings “closely” and will “tailor our security measures accordingly”.

It comes ahead of a busy schedule of sporting events here, including tomorrow’s JP Morgan Corporate Challenge Series and the OCBC Cycle Singapore from April 26 to 28. “We will continue to work with organisers of such large-scale public events, including sporting events, to put in place ample security checks and measures,” said the police.

The Singapore Sports Council’s (SSC) Strategic Development and Marketing Group chief Toh Boon Yi also said the SSC would “continue to advocate to all event organisers in Singapore to take risk assessment and security management seriously”.

Race organisers TODAY spoke to stressed that safety and security remain of utmost importance.

Mr Adrian Mok, Managing Director of events company HiVelocity, which organises the Sundown Marathon, said runners are shielded from the crowd at the start and finish lines by two layers of barricades “about 20m” away from the line, and the route is checked periodically before the start of the race.

Mr Chris Robb, Managing Director of Spectrum Worldwide, which organises the OCBC Cycle Singapore, also said they are “undertaking a thorough review” of their security measures and would be “working with the ... authorities” ahead of this month’s race. Eugene Neubronner and Charles Ong
