SINGAPORE – She was one of the hottest stars in town for the FINA Diving Grand Prix, but Australia’s Brittany Broben – a silver medallist in the women’s 10m platform at the 2012 Olympic Games – saw her medal hopes dashed due to a wrist injury.

The 19-year-old was fifth in the 10m synchronised platform on Friday (Oct 16), and finished last in the individual event a day later.

In March last year, Broben underwent shoulder reconstruction surgery which caused her to miss out on the 2014 Commonwealth Games and this year’s FINA World Championships. Misfortune struck again earlier this month, when she injured her wrist during a training session.

While she had kept her injury under wraps during the Grand Prix, she said the dives were “probably the most painful” she had ever done on the 10m platform.

“I didn’t do very well here, but I made the finals, and to do that with barely any training at all this week, I am happy with that,” she told TODAY. “I am proud of myself for getting up there again and not pulling out of competition.”

The bubbly teenager is confident of putting her injury woes behind her for another bid at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “I just need to go home and get my wrist and my dives right and I am ready to be back up there again,” she added.

“I am still young and I can still achieve so much in my life.”
