Cagers clinch historic bronze

NAYPYITAW – The Singapore men’s basketball team celebrated a special moment at the Zeyar Thiri indoor stadium yesterday (Dec 14) after defeating hosts Myanmar (89-52) to clinch the Republic’s first bronze medal in 34 years at the Myanmar SEA Games.

NAYPYITAW – The Singapore men’s basketball team celebrated a special moment at the Zeyar Thiri indoor stadium yesterday (Dec 14) after defeating hosts Myanmar (89-52) to clinch the Republic’s first bronze medal in 34 years at the Myanmar SEA Games.

Led by coach Neo Beng Siang, the Singaporean cagers had posted a crucial 62-48 victory over Indonesia on Thursday to keep their bronze medal hopes alive. Victory over the Cambodians (99-43) on Friday, and today’s win over Myanmar in their final round robin match saw the men’s team eventually finishing in third spot among the seven-nation table.

This is the first time that Singapore have won a medal since the 1979 SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Republic’s shooters also notched a silver and bronze at the North Dagon shooting range in Yangon today, with Teo Shun Xie finishing second after scoring 194.6 in the final shoot-out against Vietnam’s Nguyen Minh Chau (195.6). Vietnam’s Le Thi Hoang claimed the bronze in 174.8 points. Teo also claimed her second bronze with the women’s 10m air pistol team (Teh Xiu Hong, Teh Xiu Yi, Teo) after scoring 1,109 points to finish in second spot behind Vietnam (1,118). Malaysia finished third in 1,111 points.
