SINGAPORE — China’s divers thrilled the spectators at the OCBC Aquatic Centre tonight (Oct 16) as they superbly executed a series of clinical dives to clinch victory in the FINA Diving Grand Prix men’s and women’s 10m synchronised platform events, as well as the mixed 3m synchronised springboard.

Wang Han and Wang Ying proved too strong for the rest of their competitors as they took the gold medal in the women’s event with 288.00 points.

However, the North Korean duo of Choe Hyang and Kim Mi Rae finished a surprise second as they pushed the Chinese right down to the very last dive. Kim, 14, and Choe, 16, took silver with 282.90 points.

Ukraine’s Ganna Krasnoshlyk and Vlada Tatsenko finished third with 264.54.

Singapore’s divers also had reason to celebrate today, even though Freida Lim and Myra Lee did not finish on the podium.

The pair — who are gunning for 2016 Olympics qualification — recorded a personal best performance for their partnership today, scoring 251.67 points for a fourth-place finish.

In the men’s event, Wang An Qi and Gao Ang finished top of the three-team field with 376.47 points.

Indonesia’s M Nasrullah and Luthifi Nico Abdillah (320.94) and Egypt’s Ishak Mohab and Ezzat Youssef (209.73) were second and third respectively.

“We took gold in all the events (including mixed 3m synchronised springboard), so that was good,” said China’s coach Wang Xiao Song.

“This batch of athletes are still not up to standard for the Olympics next year yet, but we are training them up to be serious competitors in the future.”

Wang Han said: “The performance was all right. There are still areas of improvement. We have been diving for 10 years now, and came here wanting to win the gold medal.”
