SINGAPORE — Local kegler Daphne Tan was crowned the women’s singles champion at the 28th SEA Games yesterday with a total pinfall of 1368.

Singapore swept the honours as Jazreel Tan finished second with 1313 while third-placed Cherie Tan (1294) had to vacate her spot to Malaysian Esther Chia due to the ruling that no National Olympic Council (NOC) is allowed to win all three medals.

Jazreel had initially led the field, but Daphne hit a good streak in the sixth and final round with four strikes in a row to eventually pip her compatriot to the gold.

A clearly anxious Daphne stood in front of the media with her first-ever SEA Games singles gold and expressed her gratitude for the support throughout her matches.

“I kind of really wanted it. I got off to a really good start and after that it was like a stock market (with up and down scores), but I knew I had a good lead,” said the 24-year-old.

She offered her thanks to the crowd that stood by her as there was a long line to enter the bowling alley.

“Bowling is a long and draggy sport, and I expected them (the spectators) to get tired but towards the end they still went all out. It was amazing.

“I was surprised at the queue. I didn’t think that we (bowling) were a popular sport. Even my parents had problems coming in, they had to queue up!”

The men’s and women’s double categories take place today, in which Daphne will partner New Hui Fen. Jazreel will team up with Bernice Tan, while Cherie will partner Shayna Ng. Shanjayan Muniappan
