SINGAPORE – The 2017 S.League season is set to start off with a bang, as the Community Shield will be hosted at the National Stadium.
The traditional season-opener will be played on February 26th between defending league champions Albirex Niigata (S) – who swept to a historic treble last year – and runners-up Tampines Rovers.
The past six editions of the Shield were played at Jalan Besar Stadium, which has a capacity of 6,000. In contrast, the National Stadium can seat 55,000.
This was announced at a meeting between club chairmen on Friday (Jan 13) night at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Tampines vice-chairman Christopher Wong welcomed the news.
“Lim Kia Tong (president of provisional Football Association of Singapore council) hopes to rally the clubs and fans together to make this a really great start of the year and kick off the season,” he told TODAY. “Every player wants to play on the biggest stage and this will spur on the other teams (to do well)…it is a good move.”
Albirex general manager Koh Mui Tee, whose team beat Brunei DPMM 3-2 to life the Shield last year, added: “We will just try our best (to win again).”
