SINGAPORE — Tampines Rovers have confirmed the signing of national striker Khairul Amri.

The 31-year-old, who scored Singapore’s only goal at the Suzuki Cup last year, joined the Stags from the Garena Young Lions on a two-year deal, Tampines general manager Desmund Khusnin told TODAY.

This will be Amri’s third stint at Tampines, having played for them twice before from 2008-2009 and again in 2013.

The signing of the experienced striker, who has 113 caps and 32 international goals to his name, comes as Tampines continue to rebuild their squad following the departure of several key players such as former Liverpool and Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant, striker Billy Mehmet and winger Jordan Webb.

The Stags finished second in the S.League last season, behind Albirex Niigata, and also lost to the Japanese side in the Singapore Cup final. Tampines also reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup.

Amri is just one of several new players who will be donning the Tampines jersey next season. The club have already signed Balestier Khalsa duo Fazli Ayob and Jamil Ali, as well as national defender Madhu Mohana, who joined from Warriors FC last month.

Tampines will begin their season on Jan 24, when they take on the Philippines’ Global FC in the AFC Champions League first qualifying round. Global, who pulled off a domestic league and cup double last season, are coached by former Singapore goalkeeping coach John Burridge.
