SINGAPORE — The last time Singapore scored more than once in an international game was in March last year, during a 2-1 friendly win over Myanmar.

The Lions will face the same opponents tonight and head coach V Sundramoorthy hopes to see his men finding the net again, as they warm up for Saturday’s AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Taiwan.

Both matches will be played at the Jalan Besar Stadium and Sundram is looking to use the opportunity to test out his attacking tactics against Myanmar, who, at 163rd, are ranked six places below Singapore in the Fifa rankings. Taiwan is ranked 160th.

The friendly will be a closed-door affair at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

“This game is important to get the boys together and have a run-out ahead of the Taiwan game,” Sundram told TODAY.

“Our key focus is Taiwan, and even though they are two different opponents, this game (against Myanmar) will be for us to try (out) what we want to do on Saturday.

“I am looking to use it to fine-tune the tactics, which will be more attack-minded. We want to look for various options to score, especially at home, so we will try to push more players upfront and play higher up.”

Singapore, who have scored just seven times in their past 14 matches, will look to the likes of Faris Ramli and Safuwan Baharudin for goals.

Home United attacker Faris has been in red-hot form at club level, scoring 11 goals and notching up 12 assists in just 18 matches, while Safuwan, playing in an advanced role for Malaysian second-tier side PDRM FA, has netted eight times in his past six games.

Set-pieces are likely to be key for Singapore as well, with defenders Daniel Bennett and Irfan Fandi, and Safuwan, posing aerial threats.

But Sundram reiterated the need for his charges to stay disciplined as they hunt for goals. “Even if we are going forward a lot, the players have to understand how we are going to do that,” the 51-year-old said. “They still have to cope with their positions and responsibilities even as we try certain new tactics. Myanmar is technically good and they are fast, so you can expect them to come at us and it will be a good warm-up.”

Led by German tactician Gerd Zeise, Myanmar will be looking to beat Singapore for the first time in eight games. The White Angels last triumphed over Singapore at the 2001 SEA Games and have lost six of their subsequent seven meetings.

The match will also afford Sundram a final chance to see his players in action before he trims the 27-strong team to 23 for the Taiwan clash.

The former Singapore striker has also called on the fans to turn up on Saturday to roar the team on. “With the next two matches being at home, it is important for us to show the fans what we can do and also go for the wins.

“We want to entertain the supporters and hope for a full-house crowd on Saturday to back us.”
