SINGAPORE – Her nickname is “Energizer Ha Na” and Ha Na Jang certainly lived up to her nickname on Sunday (March 6) as she bulldozed her way to victory in the 2016 HSBC Women’s Champions at the Sentosa Golf Club.

The 23-year-old was simply unstoppable on the greens as she fired a closing seven-under par 65 to win the US$1.5 million (S$2.06 million) tournament with a four-round total of 269, way ahead of Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum whose final round of 68 gave her a 15-under par 273 total after her final round of 68.

South Korean Amy Yang was third after hitting a 71 for a 11-under par 277.

Jang’s overall score of 19-under was also the best tournament score recorded on the 6,493-m, par-72 Serapong Course. The previous record was 15-under by Stacy Lewis and Park Inbee at the 2013 and 2015 editions respectively.

The overall tournament record stands at 20-under. It was set by Lorena Ochoa at the inaugural edition in 2008 at the Tanah Merah Country Club’s Garden Course, which staged the competition for the first five years.

“My nickname is Energizer Ha Na, and I am very strong, and I’m very happy with the win today,” said Jang, who fired six birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey on Sunday.

“Pornanong is my good friend, but I didn’t think about her at every hole. I just focused on my own game, that’s it.

“I used to think too much about other players, about other Korean players like Kim Sei-young and Kim Hyo-Joo too. But things have changed a little in the winter training of 2015. I am feeling more comfortable and patient.”

Jang, who clinched her first LPGA Tour title last month at the Coates Golf Championship in Florida, said that things are looking bright for her in the year ahead.

With her second LPGA Tour title on Sunday, she is projected to jump from 10th to fifth in the world rankings. That will make her the second-highest ranked South Korean player in the world, only behind No. 2 Park.

Defending champion Park finished this year’s tournament in joint 30th with a three-under par 285. World no.1 Lydia Ko finished joint 15th with a seven-under 281.

Koh Sock Hwee, Singapore’s sole representative in the tournament, shot a 10-over 298 to finish joint 59th, the best result by a local golfer in the competition. Since the start of the tournament in 2008, no Singaporean had avoided finishing last.

Koh, who just turned professional two weeks ago, will play her next tournament in Vietnam at the end of the month.
