Paddler Jason Chee strikes gold at Asean Para Games despite losing right eye

SINGAPORE - National para-table tennis player Jason Chee clinched his first ever individual Asean Para Games (APG) gold medal on Friday (Sept 22) after winning the Class 2 singles title.

SINGAPORE - National para-table tennis player Jason Chee clinched his first ever individual Asean Para Games (APG) gold medal on Friday (Sept 22) after winning the Class 2 singles title.

The 34-year-old, who won silver in 2015, beat Thailand's Thirayu Chueawong 3-0 earlier today to finish top of Group A and take the crown at the 9th APG in Kuala Lumpur. The tournament was played in a round-robin format.

Chee's victory comes on the back of a right eye removal earlier this May due to cancer, which left him having to adapt his game-play in order to compensate for his affected depth perception. The navy serviceman had lost both legs, his left arm and three fingers on his right hand in a naval ship accident in 2012.

Chee had helped Singapore to win bronze in the team event two days ago, alongside teammates Darren Chua, Tan Beng Leong and Aaron Yeo.
