SINGAPORE — A largest-ever field of 24 teams, including developmental squads from England, France and Italy, are set to compete for the Ablitt Cup at this year’s edition of the Societe Generale Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby Sevens tournament.

Malaysian outfit Borneo Eagles, who beat Tradition Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YCAC) to lift the cup last year, will be returning to defend their title.

The competition, which is into its 68th edition, will be held at the Padang from Oct 30 to Nov 1, and will also feature a South African team taking part for the first time in three years.

Three-time Cup champions the Vipers were the last South African team who competed in the tournament, winning three consecutive titles from 2007 to 2009.

The Republic will be represented on the field by the Singapore national team, and a SCC team.

“I am eager to ensure that this event continues its reputation as one of the best tournaments in Asia,” said Jonathan Leow, Chairman of the SCC International Rugby 7s Organising Committee. “More importantly, I hope that this event will prove to be a really great experience for everyone. The line-up on and off the field this year will certainly entice, and we hope to see everyone there come October.”

Tickets for the competition are on sale at www.sistic.com.sg.
