SINGAPORE — Local football fans will get to meet German football legend Lothar Matthaus when the 54-year-old makes his way here this month as part of this year’s Bundesliga Legends Tour.
Matthaus, who played for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and Italy’s Inter Milan, will be in Singapore for the tour from Aug 15 to 16, which will include fan-engagement activities, and public viewings of the 2015/2016 Bundesliga season over the weekend.
He will also feature as a Bundesliga expert for the matches that will be broadcast across FOX Sports networks. The new Bundesliga season kicks off next Friday with champions Bayern Munich hosting Hamburger SV, followed by a run of eight matches over the weekend.
Captain of the West Germany team that won the World Cup in 1990, Matthaus is also the most capped German player of all time and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991.
This is the first time the Bundesliga Legends Tour will make a stopover in South-east Asia, with the event to make a stop in Kuala Lumpur (Aug 13 to 14) before travelling across the Causeway to Singapore a day later.
Event organiser, the Bundesliga, said the German football league is expanding its tour this season after enjoying a successful run in its inaugural event in Bejing last year with former Borussia Dortmund player Christoph Metzelder.
“The Bundesliga is growing internationally and I am looking forward to meeting Bundesliga fans at stops in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to celebrate the quality of football being played in the league,” said Matthaus.
While Matthaus will take part in the South-east Asian leg of the tour, another Bundesliga legend, two-time UEFA club goalkeeper of the year, Jens Lehmann, will be touring the Americas.
Lehmann, who has played for clubs such as FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and English Premier League (EPL) side Arsenal, will head to New York (Aug 11 to 12), Mexico City (Aug 13 to 14) and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (Aug 15 to 16).
Football fans here have been treated to a slew of visits by international football stars recently, starting with eight-time Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund’s trip to Singapore in their Asian tour early last month, which featured players such as Mats Hummels, Shinji Kagawa and Marco Reus, ahead of the team’s friendly match against Johor Darul Ta’zim on July 9.
The Republic also played host to the Barclays Asia Trophy for the first time last month, with English Premier League teams Arsenal, Everton, Stoke City and a Singapore Select XI competing for honours at the National Stadium on July 15 and 18.
