SINGAPORE — Valencia CF owner and Singapore billionaire Peter Lim is committed to making the La Liga side one of the best clubs in Europe, said the club’s sporting director, Suso Garcia Pitarch, on Friday (May 20).

Refuting criticisms from Spanish media and Valencia fans who have questioned Mr Lim’s commitment because he is rarely seen at Valencia’s matches, and does not communicate frequently with the fans since taking over the club in May 2014, Mr Pitarch said that Mr Lim’s influence at Valencia has been immense.

“Peter has been a big influence on everyone at the club. He is our owner. What he is thinking, and what he is aiming for, we follow and do suit. We are here trying to execute his strategy and his tactics for the club,” the 52-year-old lawyer and former Valencia player said during the club’s visit to the Australian International School yesterday.

He added that Valencia, who finished 12th in the 20-team league after a medicore season, are determined to improve their fortunes next season.

“That is our challenge. We must improve on our performance (from last season),” said Mr Pitarch. “We are thinking about a lot of different aspects of the club now — budget, new players, coach, and other strategic decisions — to prepare for the future.

“Our goals have always been a top-four spot in the league, fighting to be champions, fighting for Europa League, and fighting for Cups, because Valencia is one of the most important teams in Spain and also in Europe.”
